Honeymoon Diary: Day Two!

Byron Blog: Thursday, August 19th, 2010.

Slept in! Enchiladas and margaritas for breakfast and back to shopping! Ben Sherman store was awesome and we walked thru a mall that looked like you were outside. It had a painted ceiling to look like an evening sky that went on forever. Complete with simulated lightening and rain. It was a lot cooler than actually being outside. Temperature pretty much stays around 42 degrees Celsius.

Anyways we both got some clothes we were stoked about, went back to the hotel for gambling. Kait turned one dollar into forty dollars!! That bought our supper. We had a nap got ready and started walking down the strip yet again, even though we promised not to do that again, for Cirque du Soleil’s Love! Beatles poetry and music accompanied by the most amazing live performance I have ever seen in my life, period. Who needs drugs when you have Cirque du Soleil! The visuals and effects and the performers are all top notch! I will definitely be seeing more in the future.

Like I mentioned in the last post — we ended up sleeping in until 12noon. This was all thanks to the blackout curtains, the long day of activities, and probably the missed sleep we had leading up to the wedding. We decided to take it easy today, starting a delicious Mexican lunch at Gonzales, one of the cool theme restaurants at our hotel! Yum! We got giant Margaritas to start the day off right — yep we had just woken up, its cool. After stuffing our faces we decided to head off to the Miracle Mile shops where Byron had glimpsed a Ben Sherman boutique the day before, during our fuzzy heat wave. We found it all right and holy smokes did Byron get some awesome clothes! It was like a store MADE for Byron. I made sure to get lots of pictures of Byron being a fan boy in and out side of the store.

Next we decided to keep up our new resolution of eating and drinking on a regular basis so we stopped at this cool little bistro in the mall and ate a dozen oysters and a salad. The oysters were pretty intoxicating — it felt like we were doing shots of some lethal alcohol, but no just slurpin seafood. Crazy though — excellent oysters for being in the middle of the desert.

After the mall, we headed back to NY NY to get ready for our hot date at LOVE The Beatles Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage!!! We had a quick nap to ensure that we were well rested before embarking on the strip again, and dressed up in some new outfits we headed out. We thought we might take the Deuce dbl decker bus but it ended up being a long wait so we walked all the way to the Mirage. But this time we were prepared with lots of water and a spray bottle with cold water inside. Genius!

We got to the Mirage just in time and got our seats in the LOVE theatre. What a beautiful theatre! It wasn’t too long before the show started and holy smokes was it mind-blowing. We kind of knew that it was going to be an epic performance but it was beyond our wildest dreams! So so so amazing. The acrobatics, visuals, music, stage design, everything was incredible and beautiful. I would see this show again and again and now I am definitely inspired to see more Cirque du Soliel! Fantastic!

It was a perfect ending to a beautiful day. We ended up grabbing some late night snacks at Chin Chin’s, another cute restaurant in NY NY and hit the hay. We have a big day tomorrow — horseback riding into the Eldorado Desert at 6:40am!!!

I forgot to bring shorts so these are my adorable new Anthro shorts…on sale!

Honeymoon Diary: Day One

Byron Blog: Wednesday, August 18th, 2010.

Woke up excited at 4:00am, caught our pre-ordered cab at 5:05am for yyc and the American homeland security! Everything was on time and ran smoothly. I was expecting a bigger plane from Calgary to Salt Lake City for some reason. I don’t know my planes but it was about 20 rows deep.
We arrived at slc airport at 9:50am, starving. Being in “the land of the free” no one goes hungry, right? Luckily Dick Clark is alive and well. And so is his diner!! One Cajun burger, fries and pork chop later we are back to life.

After all the waiting we are on our flight to las Vegas. It’s a much larger plane and everyone seems excited and in good spirits for Vegas. When we landed and walked thru the plane’s side door, we were slammed with the hottest air I’ve felt in years!

I love how Americans communicate, they are very to the point and still polite if you listen closely. We got on a shuttle to the new York new York hotel. Met a couple countrymen from Toronto!

After checking in and checking out our room, it was straight for the huge margaritas and flashy slot machines! Finishing our liberally poured drinks we decided it was shopping time. Hours and hours of walking were upon us and the heat does NOT stop. By the end of our trip we were tired, partied-out and loving Las Vegas!

Kait Blog: August 18, 2021

Today we embarked on our amazing fourteen day adventure honeymoon to Las Vegas, LA, and San Francisco.  Our flight was at 7:45am this morning so we ended up being at YYC by 5:30am and then spent the rest of the time in security line-ups and getting coffees.  Since we couldn’t get a direct flight to Vegas our first stop was Salt Lake City airport.  The plane from Calgary to Salt Lake was a tiny one — only about 20 rows in it.  I remember riding in small planes like that when I was a kid living in Northern BC and Alberta.  Byron said it was like the plane to Sudbury from TO.

Flying over Salt Lake City, in our sleepy tired slightly airhead-ish state, we looked at eachother and out the window and wondered, “Is that snow?  What is all that white stuff everywhere?!” Then we realized it was salt as in, SALT Lake City….yep. Slow start for our brains today but its all good.  Tried to track down some great LDS displays at the airport for some photo opps, but no such luck so we ended up having lunch in the Dick Clark Diner, where I promptly got a million 1950s duwop songs stuck in my head.

Finally, it was time to board the plane to Vegas and boy were we ready to get going!  Our stop over was four hours and it felt like forever.  I promptly fell asleep on the plane, which Byron told me later was a good thing because the flight was quite turbulent from the strong winds over Nevada.  When we arrived at the Las Vegas airport we were SO excited!  Time to parrrty!  We got into the gate and there was slot machines the minute you got off the plane - awesome!!!  We went and tracked down an airport shuttle that would take us to NEW YORK NEW YORK and headed off into dreamland.  Our hotel is awesome!  So big with tons of fun restaurants, a giant casino, pool, roller coaster that goes around the outside of the building!  So much fun.

When we got to Vegas we realized that we were severely over-dressed. I mean, it was cold when we left Calgary so we had a reason. But we stripped down to the coolest clothes we owned and headed down to the casino.  The first thing we did was buy giant drinks and play a couple slot machines. Well, I think we drank those giant drinks a little to fast.  We decided to head out the strip to go shopping — feeling more than a little woozy!  We ended up walking the strip for hours and hours to the point of exhaustion, heat exhaustion, hangovers (because we didnt keep drinking!), sore feet, crankiness, and dry eyes (from the scorching hot wind blowing in our faces).  We couldn’t seem to catch a cab anywhere and couldn’t figure out public transportation so we ended up trudging all the way back to hotel where we realized we had walked WAY too far on the strip!  You never walk that far without a way of getting back.  Phew…..we hit the hay and woke up the next morning at 12pm.  What can I say it was an incredible first day of our honeymoon, if not a little tiresome.

Sparkley Engagement Photos! by Tom Kucy

My brother Tom did this great photo session with us one night down by the river with tons of sparklers and his amazing camera.  There was loads of mosquitos and I think some of the river neighbours were wondering what the heck we were doing but it was so much fun — definitely captured our personalities on film.  Enjoy!  All photos copyright of Tom Kucy.

decorations!

This terrible weather we have been having lately has been providing a lot of time indoors so yesterday I started working on some decorations for the wedding.  These fabulous tissue paper flower poufs are so much fun to make and look at.  I got my pals making some too yesterday and we ended up making a couple of different sizes.  So adorable!  You can create your own at Martha Stewart Weddings!

Engagement Shoot Inspiration

I am pretty excited for our upcoming engagement photoshoot with my favourite photographer, Nicoleirene Dyck of Words Are Cameras.  Not only is she super creative she is also super talented and takes fabulous photos.

Since we aren’t traditionalists, we definitely didn’t want to partake in the typical engagement style of photoshoots.  You know the ones.  Like, “Oh, we live downtown so let’s get some photos of us kissing in front of some grafitti”.  Nope, we wanted to go our own route so of course Nicoleirene was our number one choice.

No offense to these happily engaged people, but do you really sit on sidewalks and hangout. Weird.

We are doing our photoshoot at Heritage Park here in Calgary and it is going to be a 1950’s Western theme.  With all of the great buildings, amusement park rides, steam train, and incredible views we knew it was the perfect place to do the photos.  How often do you get to dress up and do a photoshoot anyways?!

Byron’s Photo Heritage Park this past weekend.  Perfect backdrop for our shoot.

I found some photos online that are the perfect inspiration for my wardrobe, hair and makeup for the day.  It’s kind of classic western babe, mixed with a bit of Hawaiian and Vegas glamour. So far I have gotten a great Western shirt to wear and some leis but I still need to find some cute high waisted shorts, a cowboy hat that feels comfortable, and come up with a fantastic hairstyle.  Byron’s outfit is coming together too.  So excited!

These photos were found on We Heart It.

the perks of engagement

#1 When you go to department stores you get special treatment, get to carry around a scanner, and are given wise advice from old ladies.

#2 You get to drink a lot of champagne, just cause.  If somebody asks — “Another bottle, Kait?!” , I can just wave my left hand at them and say “I’m engaged!”.

#3 You get random gifts from parents like that awesome large pot you’ve been after.  Yay, now we can finally make lasagna that isn’t coiled completely in a saucepan!

#4 Facebook starts advertising new and exciting things to you on your profile.  Things like the “Wedding Dress Liquid Diet - Start Now!” and “Free Wedding Photos”.  Also,  yachts and “Enjoying the Island Life”.  Sounds AWESOME!

#5 Getting to brag that I snagged the best guy EVER! <3 <3 <3

We’re gettin’ hitched!!!

Just wanted to let you all know that we got engaged 2 weeks ago!  As you can see from the picture above, we couldn’t be more perfect for eachother!  We are getting married this coming August, so stay tuned for more details!  We are so excited for everything that the future holds for us, including have a very fun wedding!
