All right, the first full week of 2014 is complete and I think it is suffice to say that we all survived and we’ve only quit half of our New Years resolutions. Which is totally a-okay. I’ve been doing January booze-free after spending way too many nights (such a thing?) in December indulging in Prosecco and Amaretto Sours. Oof. It  has been working though and I’ve managed to avoid social drinking opportunities but we are only ten days in so we shall see. I tried to give up on take-out  for the month but we just couldn’t say no to delivery Pho the other day when it was really cold. Ya win, some ya lose some. There is always another day to fix it.

I’m looking forward to a weekend of farmer’s markets (yay, they are finally open again), breakfast dates with my husband, reading my stack of books from Christmas and spending some quality time with my family. Also, planning on re-working our budgets and planning for a fresh new year of adventures. I find January is a good time to clear out unnecessary costs and re-evaluate your bills. I just managed to save $80/month on our cable+internet bill. That is $80 more for our next vacation!

Happy Friday, y’all!

Well, I’ve got some news to share with you, my friends. After weighing in on a number of recent career decisions and my desk nearly toppling over with to-do lists, I’ve arrived at the decision to leave Standard Issue as Editor. I feel good knowing it is the right decision for me at this time in my life. It is so important for me to remember why I do things in the first place and keep revisiting those thoughts in times of doubt. If I can offer any advice to anyone feeling like they are spreading themselves too thin – do what makes you happy and never compromise that feeling for anything. Ain’t nobody got time for that, pals.

As I move on, I want to wish my cofounder Mackenzie and all of my lovely contributors all the success as they move forward with Standard Issue in 2014. I feel so lucky to have been one half of this fantastic site and have gotten to work with so many amazing photographers, videographers, local businesses and bloggers as we built the site together. Thanks to everyone who brought Standard Issue to life. A bucket list item; totally checked off!

Being a member of such an incredible online community is the greatest feeling ever. I can’t wait to continue to share my creative endeavours with you here on YUPPIELOVE as always and elsewhere. Thank you to everyone for your support.

daily life // big news

Back in January, while attending Alt Summit I sat in on a round table session entitled “How to Quit Your Day Job“. And while it was definitely a dream and a goal for me then, if you had told be that I would be quitting my day job in May – only five short months later – I would have laughed.

But…..I did it!

While I have been working for an awesome arts + culture organization, full of creativity and amazing dreams for our city – it still wasn’t my dream and I knew I was always going to long for that no matter how good the job was. It was a hard decision to leave but with the encouragement of my friends and family I made the jump to self-employment and I couldn’t be happier.

I feel so good about the current projects I am working on and I am really looking forward to writing more here and keeping yuppielove full of inspiration and projects and fun. I already have a couple weekly columns lined up that I can’t wait to share with you. I promise there will be plenty of DIY projects, food and cocktail recipes and more.

When I am not here at yuppielove, I am the Calgary Editor of Vitamin Daily – a Canadian women’s lifestyle guide and I will be sharing all of my favourite things from restaurants to beauty products to fashion. I will be posting links of my top five posts of the week every Friday so watch for those picks if you are a local or a traveler coming to Calgary sometime soon. You can follow my VitaminDaily twitter too here: @vitamindailycal

I also share my favourite food, drink and must-haves for downtown Calgarians over at the getdown blog.

Besides that, you can still expect to see my Inside Job DIY projects in Swerve magazine and hopefully a couple other magazines in the near future. I contributed to a really great piece in the upcoming issue of Uppercase magazine all about the various careers involved in children’s book publishing. I feel so honoured to be among the contributors and I had amazing time interviewing some incredible people in the industry.

Other than that, doing some editing, copywriting, PR and social media work for some creative agencies and small businesses here in Calgary. All in all, things are busy and I couldn’t be happier about it.  I’m open to all sorts of collaborations and writing projects so if you think I would be a good match for your project, please get in touch!

I am so excited and lucky to be working with Alyssa Yuhas of I Like Nice Things Blog and the beautifully curated WeLikeWeLove magazine on a complete revamp of yuppielove. We have big ideas and plans for the site and it is truly incredible how Alyssa seems to know exactly what I am looking for. I guess that is what you call synergy.

And speaking of Alyssa, she is just one of the many wonderful people in my life that are so supportive of me taking this leap of faith into self-employment. So thankful to my husband and my family for being so excited and supportive about this whole thing – I am a very lucky girl to be surrounded by people who understand living and working towards a creative career.
