FRESHLY PICKED BABY MOCCASINS

freshlypicked_blog

Isn’t everything cuter in baby size? Maybe it is only me and I’m just weird but whenever I am shopping for baby gifts for friends, I always find the most adorable outfits that I secretly wish I could get in my size. Freshly Picked‘s baby moccasins are no exception. I first fell in love with this brand, three years ago when I met the genius mastermind behind the biz, Susan Petersen at ALT Summit in Salt Lake City. Not only is she a great businesswoman but she is also such an inspiring and upbeat person. I got to have breakfast with her and several other amazing retailers at a little morning hang-out with Big Cartel. I even won one of her gorgeous leather mousepads when they did a little business card draw. Her stuff is quality and I would recommend it to anyone – and I don’t even have kids!

Since then, she has gone on to do big and wonderful things. The Kardashians are massive brand supporters – anytime you seem them toting around their kiddos in the celebrity gossip mags, they are always wearing Freshly Picked moccasins. How awesome is that?! She was also very successful on an episode of ABC’s Shark Tank – what can’t this girl do?!

Anyways, with so many sweet babies just born or on the way, I thought it would be fantastic to do a giveaway with Freshly Picked for a pair of the adorable moccasins! You can head over to my Instagram page for all of the details + to enter! Giveaway ends on Friday. Good luck + thanks! xx

THE PIN PROJECT NO. 7

pinproject_no7

Oh, hello Monday! I’ve started properly enjoying the beginning of the week as of late. I used to wake up on Monday mornings with a sense of panic, adhering to Eastern Standard Time (c’mon!) and an urgency to send out emails like a maniac. I’ve starting leaving the house earlier in the morning for a quick coffee with a friend, much like you would at the lunchroom of a regular office setting. It has helped tremendously – I love bouncing ideas off of a fellow creative before I officially start the work week. I head back to my office feeling refreshed and excited.

This week’s Pin Project is a little offbeat, a little surreal. Beyond the peachy pink palette in each of these photos, I don’t see too much of a connection between these images. However, I kinda love them together. They are all slightly bizarre; the bug-eyed sunnies, the beautiful knife and the poodle holding a blooming branch. I’m gonna just go with it.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT…

MOVINGON_POST

Well, I’ve got some news to share with you, my friends. After weighing in on a number of recent career decisions and my desk nearly toppling over with to-do lists, I’ve arrived at the decision to leave Standard Issue as Editor. I feel good knowing it is the right decision for me at this time in my life. It is so important for me to remember why I do things in the first place and keep revisiting those thoughts in times of doubt. If I can offer any advice to anyone feeling like they are spreading themselves too thin – do what makes you happy and never compromise that feeling for anything. Ain’t nobody got time for that, pals.

As I move on, I want to wish my cofounder Mackenzie and all of my lovely contributors all the success as they move forward with Standard Issue in 2014. I feel so lucky to have been one half of this fantastic site and have gotten to work with so many amazing photographers, videographers, local businesses and bloggers as we built the site together. Thanks to everyone who brought Standard Issue to life. A bucket list item; totally checked off!

Being a member of such an incredible online community is the greatest feeling ever. I can’t wait to continue to share my creative endeavours with you here on YUPPIELOVE as always and elsewhere. Thank you to everyone for your support.

welcome to the new yuppielove!

Meet the new yuppielove! While the old yuppielove was super lovable and cute and comfortable, it was time to mix things up a bit. Thanks to the design wizardry of Alyssa Yuhas, this mere webpage has become a visual representation of the innerworkings of my brain. It is pretty amazing to think that a year ago, Alyssa and I went for coffee to talk about web design and what she could possibly do for me. It took a whole year to get us to this point and everything that happened along the way was pretty exciting and life-changing.

The two of us both quit our day jobs and even before I knew I was going to quit – I hired her. It is so important in our industry to keep the flow of cash moving in and out of creative pockets. I think I even explained that to Alyssa once – how I was paid to write an article and then paid her to design something for me and then she would hire someone to photograph something for a project and that person would go and buy the product that I originally wrote about. It doesn’t always happen that way or in that sort of order but I think it does happen. We are a human chain of creativity and cash.

The inspiration process had to be the most fun of all. Pulling bits and pieces of what I like and love the most about design, type and imagery was a really interesting process. You can take a peek at some of the process on my LOVE board to see what kind of stuff I was drawing inspiration from.

The great thing about the new design is that it scrolls. Hallelujah! While at one point, I love the article-ness of the previous design, scrolling is a huge step in the right direction. What was I thinking? I am also very pleased about having a better format to showcase the writing I do for magazines, blogs and other publications – I just feel I can do a lot more visually. I’m no longer stuck in my little box. That is another reason why two heads are better than one. You can learn so much from other people – even though you may consider yourself some sort of expert-of-all-trades – it is highly important that you listen and learn.

Well, I hope you love the new yuppielove as much as I do. It is pretty exciting and nervewracking to share this labour of love with you all. But it is an excellent day (I was married today 2 years ago!) and I am feeling really good about it. Let me know what you think! As always, it is a work in progress in terms of updating my writing portfolio and more but this is pretty much what you get and I hope you love it.

happy friday!

Ah yes, another week over. I can’t handle how quickly summer is slipping away. Is it really August 10th? I sure hope this super hot weather stretches well into September and *fingers crossed* October too. It has been a crazy busy week thanks to the holiday Monday. While it is always a blessing to have an extra day off to spend with family and friends, all of the work gets crunched into Tuesday to Friday. And to be honest, who really gets much work done on a Friday?

Next week will be a great week. You will see a new look here at YuppieLove which I am very excited to share with you. The new site launches on Tuesday – actually coinciding with my 2nd wedding anniversary! A big day of celebrations, most certainly.

Anyways, this weekend I am hoping to get out rafting on Sheep River and pick Saskatoon berries to my heart’s content. It is pie baking season, after all. Hope you have a great one. xoxo

I also write for Vitamin Daily & The Get Down. Here are my posts for the week!

Is there anything better than watching movies under the stars?

Celebrate your girlfriends at your next brunch with spray of beautiful handpicked flowers.

I seriously need to do a fascinator DIY project. It would be perfect for this pop-up Afternoon Tea Party!

The perfect must-haves for outdoor summer concerts!

Fashion moment! BCBGeneration opens their flagship store for Canada in Calgary!

happy friday!

Happy Friday! Well, that felt kind of like a long short week. I am glad it is the weekend and time to enjoy some live music (going to see Cuff the Duke tomorrow night!) and hang out with friends and family. The Calgary Stampede kicks off today and it is the 100 Year Centennial so it is a huge deal in my city. Literally, cowboys everywhere, hay + barnwood flanking every storefront and parties parties parties – for 10 days straight. I am partaking in a bit of the action this year which I will be sharing on Instagram!

I also write over at Vitamin Daily:

The written word is alive and well. Check out these beautiful Kate Spade cards.

Beer Hall Blitz. The National is now open.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is in the Park this summer. Go watch + share a picnic!

daily life // big news

Back in January, while attending Alt Summit I sat in on a round table session entitled “How to Quit Your Day Job“. And while it was definitely a dream and a goal for me then, if you had told be that I would be quitting my day job in May – only five short months later – I would have laughed.

But…..I did it!

While I have been working for an awesome arts + culture organization, full of creativity and amazing dreams for our city – it still wasn’t my dream and I knew I was always going to long for that no matter how good the job was. It was a hard decision to leave but with the encouragement of my friends and family I made the jump to self-employment and I couldn’t be happier.

I feel so good about the current projects I am working on and I am really looking forward to writing more here and keeping yuppielove full of inspiration and projects and fun. I already have a couple weekly columns lined up that I can’t wait to share with you. I promise there will be plenty of DIY projects, food and cocktail recipes and more.

When I am not here at yuppielove, I am the Calgary Editor of Vitamin Daily – a Canadian women’s lifestyle guide and I will be sharing all of my favourite things from restaurants to beauty products to fashion. I will be posting links of my top five posts of the week every Friday so watch for those picks if you are a local or a traveler coming to Calgary sometime soon. You can follow my VitaminDaily twitter too here: @vitamindailycal

I also share my favourite food, drink and must-haves for downtown Calgarians over at the getdown blog.

Besides that, you can still expect to see my Inside Job DIY projects in Swerve magazine and hopefully a couple other magazines in the near future. I contributed to a really great piece in the upcoming issue of Uppercase magazine all about the various careers involved in children’s book publishing. I feel so honoured to be among the contributors and I had amazing time interviewing some incredible people in the industry.

Other than that, doing some editing, copywriting, PR and social media work for some creative agencies and small businesses here in Calgary. All in all, things are busy and I couldn’t be happier about it.  I’m open to all sorts of collaborations and writing projects so if you think I would be a good match for your project, please get in touch!

I am so excited and lucky to be working with Alyssa Yuhas of I Like Nice Things Blog and the beautifully curated WeLikeWeLove magazine on a complete revamp of yuppielove. We have big ideas and plans for the site and it is truly incredible how Alyssa seems to know exactly what I am looking for. I guess that is what you call synergy.

And speaking of Alyssa, she is just one of the many wonderful people in my life that are so supportive of me taking this leap of faith into self-employment. So thankful to my husband and my family for being so excited and supportive about this whole thing – I am a very lucky girl to be surrounded by people who understand living and working towards a creative career.
